Michigan police discover meth lab near a schoolClare County, Michigan --Police in Clare County, Michigan are still surprised over the arrest of four people who operating a methamphetamine lab. They're not surprised that the meth lab was discovered, but instead where it was discovered.
ABC12's Terry Camp had more on the story. When a meth lab is found, they're usually in rural areas -- not a few hundred feet from the sheriff's department and not right in the middle of a complex of school buildings.
Shawna Shook and her family live across the hall from where the meth lab was operating. Four people are in jail, all facing a number of drug charges, including selling drugs in a drug-free school zone.
The apartment building sits right in the middle of the Harrison school complex. To the north is the bus garage and an elementary school. And to the south is another elementary school and the high school, not to mention the fact the Michigan sheriff's department is just down the street.
Cooking methamphetamine can produce an ammonia-type smell. Explosions and fires are common in the operation of meth labs, and Harrison Schools Superintendent Chris Rundle, a former Michigan state police post commander, is thankful the operation was discovered before it was too late.
For the residents who live in the complex, they're still getting over the shock that an illegal and dangerous venture was taking place in the building in which they live and raise children.
Also found in the apartment was an AK-47 assault rifle. Other charges are possible and the investigation into this case continues.
