Michigan police pick up two men wanted for feloniesADRIAN, Michigan -- A suspect in a break-in at a Riga Township bar was arraigned Monday in Lenawee County District Court.
Verlon M. Proffitt, 20, of Adrian, Michigan is facing felony charges of breaking and entering, larceny in a building and safe-breaking in connection with a break-in April 17 at Pedabones Pub, 7457 Riga Highway.
Michigan State Police from the Adrian, Michigan post who investigated the break-in also hold two misdemeanor warrants for Proffitt for larceny less than $200 and trespassing on railroad tracks.
Bond for Proffitt was set at $30,000 and he remains lodged at the Lenawee County Jail. A preliminary exam in district court was scheduled for Aug. 25.
Proffitt was apprehended Saturday evening after a short chase by Michigan police, according to a Michigan police report released Monday.
Michigan officers were checking out a tip on a suspect wanted for felony warrants about 8:15 p.m. when they saw him in a pickup in the 500 block of Grand Street. The driver of the pickup, later identified as Proffitt, sped past an Adrian, Michigan police car and ran a stop sign at Riverside and Grand streets, according to the report.
Michigan police caught up with the pickup in a driveway on Lenawee Street and Proffitt ran between some houses. Michigan officers in the area located Proffitt and arrested him.
The passenger was told not to move from the pickup, but began struggling when the Michigan officer tried to arrest him, according to the report.
As the man tried to flee, he was pushed on the hood of the car and fell to the street while the Michigan officer tried to handcuff him, according to the report. Nearby Michigan residents watching the incident helped control the struggling man while the Michigan officer handcuffed him and called for backup.
The man gave Michigan police a false name but Michigan officers identified him as Michael Madrid, 25, of Adrian, Michigan.
A search of Madrid turned up three rocks of crack cocaine and other drug paraphernalia. He was lodged at the Lenawee County Jail on charges of resisting and obstructing Michigan police and possession of cocaine.
Madrid was arraigned Monday in district court for felony resisting and obstructing Michigan police and was returned to the county jail. Bond was set at $40,000 and a preliminary exam was scheduled for Aug. 25 in district court.
Madrid also is wanted for several other offenses, including driving while license suspended and retail fraud, according to Michigan court records.
